PRK 3515 Applied Rhetoric - RE-SIT EXAMINATION
The course was taught for the last time in spring 2020. Last re-sit examinations are offered in autumn 2020 and spring 2021.
Every organisation depends on having an awareness of what and how they communicate, in order to influence the way they are received. This course will teach students about rhetoric, so that they can apply relevant methods and principles to any communication situation. Content of the course will include research in rhetoric, theory as well as criticism. Students will be introduced to basic principles of the field, enabling them to analyse and design texts and messages for different contexts and specific situations.
Students who complete the course will have a thorough understanding of rhetorical analysis, and learn to adapt communicative actions for specific tasks. They should understand typical situations and strategies, and be able to critically analyse and evaluate, using their conclusions to propose measures and help their organisations or clients to use a clear, appropriate and effective language.
After completing the course students will be able to:
- Identify a rhetorical situation and map possible options
- Utilize rhetorical thinking in the analysis of internal and external materials, as well as applying the knowledge in their own copy writing
- Understand and see the nuances between internal and external public role
- Adapt communication to relevant channels and genres
- Deal with context on both macro and micro levels
- Describe the relationship between form and content
- Explain the interaction between organizational rhetoric and everyday public discourse
- Display self adaptation or development of new approaches in communication challenges
- Students who complete this course will develop an understanding of a rhetorical mindset, including ethics and action as important perspectives in all communicative activity.

The teaching is based on the curriculum literature for the course, but also based on contemporary and local examples. This topic requires active participation.
