JUR 3613 Labour Legislation
Most conflicts at the individual level in working life are due to inadequate routines for how such conflicts can be avoided in the first place and for how conflicts should be handled and resolved. This is largely due to the failure of employers to know the basic labor law rules. The course in labor law shall provide basic knowledge of the legal regulation of individual working conditions. The students get a basic insight into the working environment legislation based on central issues that are important for the exercise of employer functions.
During the course students shall have acquired:
- Good knowledge of the central national and international sources of law in labor law
- Good knowledge of and understanding of what justifies employment law and which interests are weighed against each other.
- Good knowledge of central regulation in individual labor law
- Knowledge of collective labor law.
After completed course, the students shall be able to:
- Identify specific labor law issues
- Carry out independent assessments of legal issues
- Apply the legal method, both in light of Norwegian and international labor law sources, and be able to use relevant digital tools in this work
- Handle individual conflicts of an employment law nature
The student must:
- Have a conscious attitude to the rules and agreements that govern the relationship between employees and employers and the parties in working life
- Have developed the ability to take an independent and critical approach to various labor law issues
- Have developed the ability to understand the importance of a sustainable working life

The students shall work on exercises for each topic which will later be discussed in class. This form of teaching requires that students prepare for class by reading the syllabus and the relevant rules of law. Students are expected to bring support materials especially the statute book to class so that they become familiar with using them when studying the various topics. On the whole, only central issues in the syllabus will be covered and discussed during the lectures. Parts of the syllabus must be acquired through self-tuition. The lecture plan will provide detailed information on the various topics both the general and specific parts.
Deviations in teaching and exams may occur if external conditions or unforeseen events call for this.

A course of 1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 26-30 hours. Therefore a course of 7,5 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of at least 200 hours.
