Learning Outcomes

Starting with the academic year 2013/2014 the programme Bachelor of  Shipping Management is integrated with the programme Bachelor in Business Administration. Se section 1st year for more information.

Learning Outcomes for the ProgrammeNorway is one of the leading shipping nations in the world, and BI has a long tradition of teaching and doing research in the shipping area. This programme will give the students knowledge about a globalized industry and enable them to understand how shipping is an integrated and important part of the supply chain. They will learn about the shipping market, combination of transport modes and environmental issues related to shipping. This programme is taught entirely in English and has a deliberate international emphasis. The student population is international and culturally diverse. Through a bachelor thesis and a possible internship the students will get acquainted with the Norwegian shipping environment and be introduced to the various job opportunities this international industry has to offer.

Acquired KnowledgeUpon completion of the programme, students will understand the shipping industry and its various segments. Students will know the basics of maritime legislation and contractual framework of international shipping, and potential legal liabilities in connection with owning and operating a vessel for the different stakeholders. They should be able to explain all transportation modes, know how to operate a port and understand how international logistics work. 

Acquired SkillsAfter completing the programme, students will have developed analytical and strategic skills related to commercial, juridical and organizational aspects of the shipping industry. They will be able to apply international strategy theories to companies operating within the shipping industry. Students will also have analytical and strategic skills related to the spot market, bill of loading and seaway bills. They should be able to evaluate and communicate shipping investment proposals including possible trade off decisions.

ReflectionAfter completing the programme, students will be aware of the major role of the shipping industry in world trade and be able to reflect on the trade offs between profitability and environmental issues.
