Introduction
SPÅ0065 is a foundation course in Spanish, intended for students with no previous knowledge of the language. It will also be appropriate for students who have just a basic knowledge of Spanish. Participants ought to be genuinely interested in learning the language and they must be prepared for working hard and spending much time in doing so. The course comprises 100 teaching hours, starting with 48 in the autumn term and followed by 52 in the spring term.

Objective
This foundation course in Spanish aims at preparing the participants for studies of Spanish at university level. The objective of the course is to provide complete basic knowledge of the language, along with oral and written skills which will enable the students to follow BI`s Business communication in Spanish (both written and oral, totalling 15 ECTS). In addition to an elementary vocabulary, students should learn to use various linguistic structures and forms of Spanish, such as the modes and tenses of the verbal system. The course also will provide a certain insight into the culture and society of the Spanish-speaking countries.

Course structure
The course comprises 48 hours of teaching in the autumn term (SPÅ0066) and 52 hours in the spring term (SPÅ0067). New material will be explained in plenum, but most of the activities will take place in smaller groups. Progression is very rapid and the course will be felt to be quite challenging both as time and effort are concerned. Students must be prepared to work hard between classes, as the number of teaching hours is small compared to the syllabus. The text book "Arriba" will be used in the autumn term and "Más arriba" in the spring term. The work- books belonging to "Arriba" and "Más arriba" and the grammar training books "Aprende" (1, 2, 3 and 4) will not be used in class. They are, however, strongly recommended for self study. A plan detailing the program of every week will be presented at the beginning of each term. It is expected that the students are active in class and thoroughly prepared for the teaching sessions. On Blackboard they will find progression tests with solutions. By the end of the first semester the students will be asked to read a number of relatively easy, literary texts.

Examination
Students will sit a five hour individual written exam by the end of the spring term, generally in the first half of May. The grading is "pass" or "fail". The students who pass the exam qualify for participation in Business communication in Spanish, oral and written, which have 7,5 ECTS each.
