Introduction

Mathematics for Economists is a foundation mathematics course that is included as a compulsory part of the bachelor's programs in economic administration subjects.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will have acquired mathematical knowledge in basic algebra and function theory, also with functions in several variables.

Learning outcomes - Skills

The aim is to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts both through the ability to perform mathematical calculations and to gain a deeper conceptual understanding. This means, for example, the ability to see connections between algebraic and graphical representations the same problem or to see connections between mathematics and other subjects, especially economics. Students gain skills in understanding mathematical problems and how to choose appropriate strategies for solving them.

General Competence

The ability of analytical thinking and being able to reflect on the results and calculations will be strengthened thoughout the course.

Course content
  • Basic algebra.
  • Solving equations and inequalities. Systems of equations.
  • Functions and graphs.
  • Differentiation and its use in economics.
  • Basic financial mathematics.
  • Basic integration.
  • Functions of two variables. Partial differentiation and Langrange's method.
  • Introduction to matrices and Gauss elimination. 
Teaching and learning activities

The course is taught over one semester and consists of 42 lecture hours and 14 tutoring hours. In the lectures, central parts of the syllabus are reviewed.

Problem solving will be a central part of the joint lectures in that the students are presented with tasks in the lecture and receive feedback by having these reviewed and discussed. Each week, a work program will be drawn up with literature references and tasks. The student must acquire the material in the literature reference and solve the tasks. Some of the tasks will be reviewed in plenary.

Completion as an online course

In the online version of the course, the online teacher, in collaboration with the study administration, will organize an appropriate combination of digital learning resources and activities. This corresponds to the number of hours stated as teaching on campus. Online students are also offered a study guide that will contribute to progression and give an overview. The total recommended time needed for completing the course also applies here.

To support the students' learning process, BI organizes seminar groups and other guidance services at our Campuses. It is strongly encouraged that students participate in these offers in order to understand the subject.

From the academic year 2024/2025, the type of evaluation in this course has changed from two exam elements (former exam codes MET 29105 and MET 29106) to one exam element (new exam code MET 29107).

Final re-sit exams in MET 29105 and MET 29106 are offered in autumn 2024 and spring 2025.
