Introduction

In its essence management is about getting things done through people and human resources. This course addresses how organizations can and actually do manage human resources at strategic, tactical, and operational levels. The course will expose the participants to current trends in research and practice of human resource management by engaging them in both practice-oriented experiential learning as well as evidence-based approach towards HRM.

Teaching and learning activities

1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 26-30 hours.

The course is conducted through a total of 48 hours of lectures, 30 hours of group work and 46 hours of independent studies.

The course is a part of a full MBA programme and examination in all courses must be passed in order to obtain a certificate.

In all BI Executive courses and programmes, there is a mutual requirement
for the student and the course responsible regarding the involvement of the student's experience in the planning and implementation of courses, modules and programmes. This means that the student has the right and duty to get involved with their own knowledge and practice relevance, through the active sharing of their relevant experience and knowledge.

Exam
70% - Term paper (individual):
The term paper must be handed in accordance to the exam regulations. It will be analysis of a chosen case study, where students are expected to identify problem symptoms, provide analysis of root-causes by connecting theory to practice, and suggest recommendations.

30% - Group video presentations: Using storytelling and video, we aim to both deductively apply theoretical concepts to real-life situations but even more so inductively co-create new knowledge from real life situations about chosen HRM topics in the context of student organizations.  Its essence is for students to assume the role of a journalist and video record (with smartphones) stories about chosen concepts and ideas from the course textbook through the action learning approach within an organizational setting.

Students will get instructions and technical support from teaching assistant at the beginning and in the process of preparing their stories. The final deliverable is a repository of short video cases on topics of human resource management in student organizations.

Criteria against each which group projects will be graded are quality of analysis, creativity in presentation of the chosen topic and narrative, and effort made to connect the narrative with the course materials. The overall scope here is for students to develop a practical and rigorous approach towards practice of human resource management at work.

While we do not grade for it, we also strongly encourage Individual student activity in the classroom, where top contributors would typically include students that are active throughout the whole duration of the course, providing examples, evidence-based opinions, critical consideration, come prepared to classes, read up on voluntary materials and in general co-create a climate of experiential collegiate learning.  Fair contributors are those that meet the expectations set by the instructor and occasionally contribute to discussions. Poor class contribution is a student behavior where student do not appear in the classroom, are passive and/or contribute in terms of quantity rather quality of arguments).

Software tools
Online HRM simulation, where student assume the role of human resource manager in need of allocating resources over time, prioritizing HR practices of their choosing. During the simulation, student are also resolving short dilemmas and scenarios they confront.
