JOU 3402 Journalism and news - RE-SIT EXAMINATION Responsible for the course Guri Hjeltnes Department Department of Communication - Culture and Languages Term According to study plan ECTS Credits 7,5 Language of instruction Norwegian Introduction In this course students will be taught basic news production for print and web. They should obtain journalistic skills in research and news judgment, and in news writing and publishing. The course is tailored to stimulate the students’ curiosity and enhance their understanding of news value. They will be trained in using digital tools to find and analyze information guided by ethical principles and the discipline of verification. Learning outcome Acquired Knowledge The students should obtain a thorough understanding of news reporting for different media platforms with a particular focus on continuous news production for the web. They will acquire knowledge about the fundamental qualities and values of news reporting and the distinctive features that separate news reporting from other forms of information production and mediation. They should obtain basic knowledge about the ethical standards and legal framework of journalism, particularly the content of the Code of Conduct of the Norwegian Press (Vær Varsom-plakaten) Acquired Skills The students should learn basic skills in reporting from spot news events, with a particular focus on using social media and dialog with their audience in the research and reporting process. They should learn the formula of news reporting and how to present their material in interesting and compelling ways to their audience. Through hands-on exercises the students will be trained in working in a convergent editorial environment where news stories are planned and produced for multiplatform purposes. Reflection The students will be introduced to the societal responsibility and civic role of journalism. They should obtain in-depth competency on ethical challenges related to quick and continuous web publishing and dialogue with the audience. Prerequisites None. Computer-based tools Access to PC with Word/Windows and printer. It is strongly recommended for students to employ their own laptop. Learning process and workload The course will be based on a combination of lectures, individual practical assignments, group discussions and supervision by the lecturer. The students will be engaged in hands-on training in information gathering and reporting. They will prepare material for their own group blog and for print publishing. They will be working to complete an assignment folder throughout the course. The complete folder must contain a selection of three journalistic texts plus a blog text on selected topics from the course. Recommended use of time:
Examination The final grade in the course is based on following activities: Part 1 - Portfolio, counts 60% towards the grade The portfolio must be handed in at the end of term and must consist of: - A blog text of 1000-1200 words on a selected press ethical topic of the student’s own choice. It is advised that the topic be selected from the course syllabus and lecture material. - Three journalistic texts – a paragraph text of 150-200 words, a short news article of 300-450 words and a longer news article of 600-800 words. The journalistic texts must result from an individual journalistic process carried out by each student. This includes research, information gathering, information processing and presentation within the framework of news reporting. At least one of the texts must be tailored for web publishing. If the articles contain audio files or references to sources on web, these must be handed in on memory sticks marked with student number and course code. - A short description of the work on the blog text and the journalistic works (max two A4 pages in Word format) Part 2 – a 72-hour individual take-home examination, counts 40% towards the grade. Both the portfolio and the take-home examination must be passed to obtain the final grade. Examination code(s) JOU 34021 - Portfolio, counts 60 % towards grade in JOU 3402 Journalism and News, 7,5 ECTS credits. JOU 34022 – a 72-hour individual take-home examination, counts 40 % towards the grade in JOU 3402 Journalism and News, 7,5 ECTS credits. Examination support materials All support materials are allowed. Re-sit examination Rre-sit in Portfolio (JOU 34021) and take-home-exam (JOU 34022) in autumn 2012 and last time spring 2013. All parts must be passed to obtain final grade in the course. Re-sit exams are however possible to do separately. Additional information |
