STR 1301 Strategy I
This course gives an introduction to strategy theory, strategic analyses and strategic choices that aim to improve businesses’ ability to create and appropriate value.
During the course, the students will:
- Develop ability to use business models in analyses of businesses’ value creation.
- Develop ability to analyze the external environments of businesses and derive implications for positioning choices.
- Develop ability to analyze businesses’ resources and derive implications for strategic choices regarding resource acquisition and development.
- Develop ability to analyze businesses’ activity sets and derive implications for strategic choices regarding activity configuration.
- The students will also understand how sustainability concerns may influence strategic choices and approach to competition.
Upon course completion, the students should be able to:
- Explain businesses underlying business model and value creation logic.
- Assess the influence of strategic choices on businesses’ resource acquisition and resource development.
- Assess the influence of structural factors on businesses’ activities as well as mobility on the competitive arena.
- Assess how different strategic choices influence businesses’ ability to create and appropriate value
- Identify concerns for sustainability in businesses’ strategic choices and approach to competition.
The students should be able to critically reflect on the models, framework and theories. The ability to critically reflect will include concerns for sustainability and ethics.

The course consists of 45 hours of lecture, cases and exercises.
Re-sit examination
Students that have not gotten approved the coursework requirements, must re-take the exercises during the next scheduled course.
Students that have not passed the written examination or who wish to improve their grade may re-take the examination in connection with the next scheduled examination.
