ENT 3610 Leadership and Valuation of a Start-Up Company
The main objective of the course is to enable students to raise investor capital for a start-up company. The course will provide students with skills so that they are equipped to perform this process in practice. This involves being able to lead this process, assess the value of the company and understand the investors' perspectives.
Lectures, student presentations and discussions are planned.
After the course the students should have:
- Acquired knowledge of valuation and raising capital
- Gained an understanding of management in start-ups, and management of processes to raise capital in particular
- Acquired knowledge of the importance of team composition when raising capital
- Acquired knowledge of scaling and growth
After completing the course the students should:
- Be able to value a start-up company and understand the difference between value and price
- Be able to raise capital for a start-up company
- Be able to lead a round of raising capital
- Be able to mobilize resources in teams and communicate remotely
- Lead start-up companies for further growth
The course will give the students competence so that they are equipped to carry out a capital raising process in practice. Students should be able to understand and reflect on the complexity of such processes.
- Part 1: Budgeting and forecasting, present value calculations, required returns and risk, profitability analysis and valuation of start-up companies.
- Part 2: Sources of capital and capital requirements, managing capital raising processes, team composition and shareholder agreements, and organizing for future growth.
The course is completed with 32 hours of lectures, group discussions and student presentations in groups. The teaching is organized with a high degree of interactivity - through presentations, discussions, group work and meetings with externals.
Work requirements
Students are expected to be present during all lectures and actively contribute to knowledge exchange and class discussion. Students must complete and pass two out of four assignments to sit for the exam; at least one team assignment and one individual assignment (work requirements are posted and handed in on itslearning).
Two of the work requirements must be submitted in groups as a written assignment (based on part 1 of the course). The students self-organize into groups of 2-3 students, and these are the same students that will hand in the final project exam together.
The two remaining assignments are handed in individually and based upon reflections associated with Part 2 of the course.
Re-sit
Students who do not pass the work requirement in the course may not take the exam. This means that they must retake the entire course for later completion.
Students who do not pass a written examination or who wish to improve the grade, can take a new continuation examination at a later examination.
Starting in the spring of 2024, the form of evaluation in this course has changed from two exam codes (ENT 36101 and ENT 36102) to one exam code (ENT 36103).
A re-sit examination is offered in the former exam codes ENT 36101 and ENT 36102 in autumn 2023 and last time in spring 2024.
