Introduction

Innovation, from incremental improvements to radical changes, are the future for the company. Innovation is value creation. The challange is market acceptance. To develop new products and services that succeed in the market is difficult. Successful NPD managers are characterized by being both creative and analytic, they area ble to head cross functional teams, and, last but not least, they are got at gathering market insights ant conduct market testing. A good product manager is a market oriented product manager.
The aim of this course is to give the students the knowledge, the tools and the skills they need to become market oriented product managers. The students will learn how to become design thinkers. They will learn how to collect market information, develop simple concept/ prototypes, conduct market testing and make simple business plans. This course is particularly relevant for students that want to take an active development role in public or private sector. During this course the students will gain the necessary knowledge and get the tools and skills necessary to succeed as an innovator in todays’ complex market.
 

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

After the course, the students can:
•    Explain design thinking and how a design thinking process can create value.
•    Explain success factors for product development.
•    Explain why good market insight is important for innovation.
•    Describe how to gather relevant market insights.
•    Describe why and how to conduct market testing
•    Describe simple canvas techniques for business model development.

During this course, the students will be made aware of  the importance of corporate social responsibility and ethical considerations when innovating.

Teaching and learning activities

The point of departure for the learning process will be a concrete problems  the students know from their own life or work place. The  learning process will consist of two physical modules of two days each, consisting of lectures, group work, discussion and student presentations. Here the students will gain knowledge and skills about innovation. In between the physical meetings, the students will work on a practical problem. They will get access to digital learning resources and get continues feedback on hand-ins and presentations.
