The bachelor’s program is a three-year full-time study, where each academic year comprises 60 credits. In total, the bachelor’s programme consists of 180 credits. The credits are in accordance with the European ECTS system (European Credit Transfer System).

Candidate Profile

The Bachelor's degree programme in Economics and Management provides candidates with an academically intensive, broad and applicable competence platform within the subjects of economics and management. The study program is specifically designed to equip candidates with the analytical and digital skills, as well as research-based knowledge, needed to solve complex business economic problems of both a national and international nature.

Sustainability – understood as value creation and management of both local and global resources in a long-term perspective – is central to the study program. Candidates must therefore have knowledge of micro-level decisions within private and public enterprises with the aim of coordinating and optimizing the use of scarce resources to achieve the organization's goals, within given local and global sustainability frameworks. They must be able to contribute to promoting organizations and businesses' innovation and adaptability, and they must be able to understand both ethical aspects and societal impacts of decisions made, with the goal of being able to make responsible choices.

Candidates must be able to use the competence they develop through the study program on practical issues they may encounter in working life. They should be able to plan and carry out their own projects, work together with others in groups, be able to communicate subject matter in writing and orally and be able to exchange views and experiences, and thus contribute to the development of good practice. The study programme should contribute to the candidates' critical thinking, provide a good basis for further studies at master's level, and promote lifelong learning.

The study programme offers both internships and exchanges, which gives the candidate good opportunities to acquire both business-relevant and internationally valuable experience.

Learning outcome - Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has in-depth, broad and research-based knowledge of central themes, theories, issues, processes, tools and methods within the economic and administrative field, including:
    • how businesses are financed, investments are assessed, financial management tools are used and accounts are prepared and analyzed.
    • how one establishes, organises and manages a business, motivates employees, develops and implements strategies, and markets and positions products.
    • how consumers and producers make their choices and are influenced by market structures, economic policy, technology and international framework conditions, including global sustainability goals.
    • how businesses carry out their activities in an ethically sound, socially responsible and sustainable manner.
  • has solid knowledge of mathematics, statistics and social science methods, including how relevant methodological tools are used to collect, organize and analyze data.
  • is familiar with the history of business economics and economics, as well as the practice and research tradition of these fields.
Learning outcome - Skills

The candidate:

  • can apply professional knowledge and relevant results from research and development work to practical and theoretical issues and make justified choices, including:
    • obtain, sort and evaluate relevant information.
    • analyze economic and administrative issues using appropriate theory and empirical methods.
    • make a critical assessment of uncertainty in their own analyses.
  • can communicate the content of analyses, methodological choices, results and assumptions both orally and in writing, in both Norwegian and English.
  • can use working life-relevant digital tools (such as Excel and selected programming languages), techniques and forms of expression.
  • can assess different types of risk and consequences of decisions.
  • can apply different professional perspectives and theoretical approaches to understand how businesses function.
    • can integrate ethical soundness, responsibility and sustainability considerations into financial analyses, business models and practice.

Undervisningen i enkelte forelesninger, eller hele kurs kan bli gjennomført på engelsk.

Studiet omfatter 6 valgkurs á 7,5 studiepoeng. Dette innebærer at studentene har 45 studiepoeng til valg i henholdsvis 4. og 5. semester. Følgende valg er mulig:

4. semester

  • Søke Internship eller velge valgkurs tilsvarende 30 studiepoeng.
  • Søke Utveksling i hele semesteret 30 studieopoeng. 

5. semester

  • 15 studiepoeng til valg, eller søke om Internship, dersom man ikke allerede har gjennomført dette i 4. semester.

Structure

The Bachelor Programmes at BI Norwegian Business School are, as a rule, composed of 60 credits with common courses (common courses for all or more programmes), 75 credits with programme courses adapted to the individual study program, and 45 credits with elective courses. The minimum course size is 7.5 credits. 

It is possible to apply for admission to another bachelor's program after the first year of study. However, it may be necessary to take additional courses. 

Students can apply for admission to the studies after the 1st and 2nd year completed at other colleges, provided that the applicant/student has covered the necessary subject areas or undertakes to take the necessary courses in addition. Specific requirements for subject composition are prepared for each study. 

To obtain a Bachelor's degree from BI, at least 60 credits must be acquired at BI Norwegian School of Management. 

Required progression

According to BI's Regulations on Admissions, Studies and Examinations, Chapter 2, § 2.6, point 1 b) which deals with admissions and contractual relations, it states what is required to be allowed to continue on to the Master's part after the 3-year Bachelor's part. The regulations state that;

"Students must have shown satisfactory study progression in their studies at bachelor's level. Satisfactory progression is defined as having completed 180 credits at bachelor's level".
