Learning outcomes - Knowledge

Upon finishing the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand and use the basics of Power BI, such as Power Query, Power Pivot, and Power View.
  • Explain the formula language DAX, its syntax, powers, and limitations.
  • Describe the scripting language M and how it relates to DAX.
  • Comprehend the principles behind informative and professional graphs.
Learning outcomes - Skills

Upon finishing the course, students will gain the ability to:

  • Process, analyze, and visualize data with Power BI.
  • Build interactive dashboards and generate detailed reports.
  • Implement queries and establish connections to external data sources.
  • Use M for data preprocessing and DAX for data modification.
Course content
  • Introduction to Power BI and the Power Cloud ecosystem.
  • Connecting to data sources such as databases and Excel sheets.
  • Data querying with DAX:
    • Variables.
    • Functions.
    • Conditionals and control flow.
    • Data filtering using, e.g., FILTER, ALL, and ALLEXCEPT.
    • Relationship to Excel programming.
  • Data preprocessing with Power Query and M.
    • Combine data.
    • Transform data.
    • Handle errors and NULLs in data.
    • Write custom preprocessing functions with M.
  • Model data: Create relationships, design tables, and calculate columns
  • Visualization with Power View
  • Interactivity and dashboards
  • Report design
  • Connecting Power BI to other tools, such as Excel
Teaching and learning activities

Organized classes combining classical lectures with discussing and solving practical problems. (Students are expected to prepare for these sessions by going through selected material.) in total 45 hours.

The course requires access to Microsoft Power BI.
