Introduction

Qualitative methodology is essential to understand and describe organizations and leadership. A precondition to maintain, develop and change an organization, is knowledge of what characterizes the current situation. Insight into qualitative methodology is essential not only to develop knowledge of an organization, but also to evaluate the quality and premisses of this knowledge. Qualitative methodology is also useful to understand and develop the role as helper, advisor and change agent in an organization. 

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

Students will acquire basic knowledge and critical understanding of qualitative research methodology and the different stages of a qualitative research process. 

Learning outcomes - Skills

After completing the course, the students shall be able to carry out investigations based on qualitative methodology, and be able to reflect on opportunities and weaknesses of such investigations.  

General Competence

After the course, students should be able to understand qualitative methodology, and how to use qualitative methods for practical research and investigations into organizations. 

Course content
  • Introduction: Qualitative methodology - what, why, when?
  • Qualitative methods: What characterizes important qualitative research methods?
  • Analysing: How to analyse qualitative data material?
  • Quality: What characterizes good qualitative research?
  • The expert role: What does it take to act as a helper, advisor, internal consultant, external consultant and change agent in an organization? What is expertise?
Teaching and learning activities

• The course is completed with 30 hours of lectures on the five main topics in the course. In addition, guidance is given on the term paper and feedback on voluntary work requirements.

• The exam is written and consists of a multiple-choice test and a term paper.

• The term paper can be written individually or in groups of up to 3 students. The multiple-choice test is conducted individually.

Term paper will be maximum 5000 words, exclusive of the front page, table of contents, reference list and appendix. In the appendix there should be minimum a transcription of the exam data. There will be plagiarism control of the portfolios. Re-sit examinations can be taken separately. All exams must be passed to obtain a final grade in the course.
