Introduction

This programme supports the students’ development of a global Startup. The programme is divided into two main modules, the first module consists of a Lean Startup development process with a practical approach, in which the students actively develop a Startup. The second module consists of a process for developing a professional business plan for a global Startup, which makes the company attractive for investors and business partners, and which secures a good strategy for growth.

The first part, Lean Startup, involves active participation in a development process and formulation of a written work by the students while they establish a Startup. This is a practical module, in which the student within a defined period develops a reproducible and scalable business model for starting up, with the goal of establishing and developing a company. The students follow a structured development process, in which it is important that students to continually develop, test and improve the company’s business concept. This course module therefore requires active participation, collection of data, as well as other activities outside the classroom. The students will work in teams and get interdisciplinary supervision relating to their business concept and the various factors involved in starting up a new business. The students hand in a written work that includes a Business Model for their enterprise as well as a professional justification.

The second part - The Global Startup Business Plan – involves active participation in a development process and formulation of a written work that the students prepare while establishing the startup. The students follow a structured development process, where they are required to participate and take part in activities, and where they receive interdisciplinary supervision on the various areas relating to setting up a new enterprise. In this part, the students will hand in a Business Plan consisting of two parts: 1) A business plan for their enterprise, and 2) a professional, theory-based justification for the business plan, which applies relevant theory and methods. The professional justification will show that the student has understood and can apply relevant theory and analysis tools.

Learning process and requirements to students

In part 1 the students follow a structured process with compulsory collection and registration of facts and analyses relating to the business concept, this process lasts throughout part 1. The students will work continuously on their business model and make changes based on collected data. At each course module the students will present the business concept, recent changes and the strategy for work leading up to the next course module. Most of the work in this part of the programme will therefore take place outside the classroom.

In part 2, the students follow a structured supervision process with active participation. This process lasts throughout part 2. The students work on a Global Startup Business Plan, which is to be their Business Plan, and a professional justification of the business plan. The reasoning behind the professional justification is that the business plan must be founded on facts, analyses and application of relevant theory.

The programme is structured as a combination of experience-based learning, interactive lectures, discussions and activities in class, as well as creative student presentations, in addition to active collection and interaction with companies and potential customers of the relevant start-ups. The programme requires active participation in a workload accounting for 150 hours.

Project tutorials differ in each Executive Master of Management programme and will consist of personal tutorials and tutorials given in class. Generally, the students may expect consulting tutorials, not evaluating tutorials. Tutorials offered are estimated at four hours per term paper following a regular Master of Management programme.

Please note that while attendance is not compulsory in all programmes, it is the student's own responsibility to obtain any information provided in class that is not included on the course homepage/ itslearning or other course materials.

The students are evaluated through a term paper, counting 60% of the total grade and an oral examination in front of an evaluation board consisting of a combination of investors, senior entrepreneurs and professors, counting 40% of the total grade. The term paper may be written individually or in groups of maximum three persons. All evaluations must be passed to obtain a certificate for the programme.

The term paper is included in the degree’s independent work of degree, cf national regulation on requirements for master’s degree, equivalent to 18 ECTS credits per. programme. For the Executive Master of Management degree, the independent work of degree represents the sum of term papers from three programmes.
