Introduction

The course will provide an introduction to private and public funding forms in general, and provide particular emphasis on cultural sponsorship. Students will be introduced to key concepts and theoretical approaches within these fields, and the material will be contextualised from a historical perspective.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

The course will provide an introduction to private and public forms of financing in the creative sector, as well as exploring theories concerning the historical relationships and contradictions that exist between capital and culture/arts. The student will become acquainted with theories regarding cultural sponsorship, cultural entrepreneurism, and crowdfunding. Furthermore, the student will acquire knowledge about the economics of the various creative industries.

Learning outcomes - Skills

Students should be able to explain the main principles of financing forms. The student should be able to analyse the complex relationships between culture and capital using theories of cultural sponsorship/partnership, aesthetisation and cultural entrepreneurship. During the course, students will learn to apply the newly acquired historical insights and the theoretical tools to contemporary real life examples. Students should also be able to outline an overall strategy for cultural sponsorship/partnership.

General Competence

Students should develop respect for knowledge and scientific and cultural values, and will learn to handle the ethical dilemmas that arise where culture and business intersect.

Teaching and learning activities

The course is taught via lectures, group case work and in-class case presentation. There will be 24 hours of lectures on course topics, and 8 hours will be used for case work, presentations, and discussion of presentations.
