JUR 3420 Business Law
The course provides students with an introduction to key business law topics and an overview of the legal framework in business. Students are given an overview of the most important legal regulations for a business to operate in a market, as well as an introduction to how the rules are to be interpreted.
This includes learning about ownership forms, including how businesses are started, operated, developed and changed in line with needs, legal frameworks and expectations in society. Furthermore, the course provides a general knowledge of the legal framework governing how companies can conduct their business in an ethical, responsible and sustainable manner. In this connection, the students will learn about companies 'contract law regulations, companies' employers 'liability, companies' liability for damages and what requirements are made to the various decision-making bodies in a company and the division of responsibilities between the bodies, etc.
The course is therefore central to understanding the legal framework that enables companies to conduct their business in an ethical, responsible and sustainable manner, as well as how companies can collaborate in different contexts and across disciplines.
The course emphasizes that the students should be able to use legal competence on practical issues that they can face in working life. Companies with good knowledge of business law will therefore have a great competitive advantage.
The course is adapted to all studies at BI Norwegian Business School.
During the course, the students will acquire basic knowledge of the business law framework, both in light of Norwegian and international sources of law, which is important for a business.
The students shall be able to account for the main legal aspects and liabilities related to customers, shareholders and employees. They shall be able to identify, analyze and solve legal problems within business law on the basis Norwegian and international sources of law.
The students shall be familiar with how businesses exercise their activities so that they stay within the business legal framework. This means that the students must also know the grey area outside the clearly defined rules. They shall understand the ethical principles established in legal standards in the legislation, and know how to assess these issues in practice. This means that the students must also know how the companies integrate accountability into their business models and practices, so that the companies carry out their activities within the legal framework for ethical, responsible and sustainable business activities.
The course gives an introduction to following key business topics:
- Legal method and writing technique
- Contract law
- Law of sales
- Liability law
- Company law
- Labour law
- Monetary claims
The course consists of 39 teaching hours, with lectures and use of cases and assignments. The students will work together in groups with cases / assignments. The students will therefore be trained in communicating the subject verbally and in writing. Students are expected to have studied the relevant syllabus material and rules of law to be covered in each lecture. Students are expected to bring the code of laws and other supporting materials to class, so that they become familiar with using them in the study of various topics. The lecture/activity plan will show what topics will be covered.
Only key issues in the syllabus will be focused on and discussed in the lectures. Parts of the syllabus must therefore be acquired by students on their own (self-study).
The students must therefore, between the lectures, work on lessons associated with each subject in the digital book "Introduction to Business Law". The lessons include short introduction to theory, video, audiobook, control questions, examples, cases / tasks and checklists.
The course has no mandatory work requirements. The students are, however, invited to submit two tasks directed by a student counselor team. Submission is optional.
When course is delivered online, lecturer, in cooperation with the Academic Services Network, will organize an appropriate combination of digital teaching and lectures. Online students are also offered a study guide to contribute to progression and overview. Total recommended time spent for completing the course also applies here.
