JOU 3660 Bachelor thesis of Media development and Journalism Responsible for the course Tor Bang Department Department of Communication - Culture and Languages Term According to study plan ECTS Credits 15 Language of instruction Norwegian Introduction The bachelor thesis is the final student work, with a qualitative or a quantitative work within the journalism or media fields. The thesis is a mandatory part of the media development and journalism bachelor program. Students may work by themselves to develop and write the the thesis, or they may work in groups of two or three. Learning outcome The objective is to learn how to analyze and reflect over personal experience from the internship period. The experience may be situations, conflicts, dilemmas, things that happen and that carries with them professional challenges (ethical, source-critical, practical work, relationships with co-workers etc). Students who prefer to analyze a journalistic or mediated field, are expected to demonstrate their depth of insight and knowledge, accumulated during their bachelor program. Acquired knowledge Objective is that students understand how to define, develop and deliver an independent academic work within a defined time frame. Students must understand the relevant terminology, see solutions and expected consequences. Students must understand scientific demands for an academic paper. Acquired skills Students who work with relevant thesis, must be able to formulate a research question. The research question must in focus during the holistic process; understanding the issue, collection of data, analysis, strategies, plans and suggestions. A holistic approach might be necessary. Reflections Working with the bachelor thesis, students will learn how knowledge is developed from research, and will develop an ethical and critical approach to sources, data and informant, as well as adequate references to own and other's works. Prerequisites Students must have in-depths knowledge in the program field, media development and journalism, as well as knowledge of scientific methodogy. To write a thesis on journalistic work, students have to demonstrate an accepted internship. Qualitative and/or quantitative analysis. Computer-based tools Data collection programs, i.e. confirmit, analysis programs like SPSS. Personal computer with word processing program. Library digital resources. Learning process and workload Students are expected to take personal responsibility for the work of the Bachelor thesis. Therefore students are required to make preparations in advance of counseling and seminars in order to have a professional opinion as basis for discussions and guidance. The course is conducted over a semester and includes seminars and tutorials.

Examination Bachelor thesis to be submitted by a given deadline. Students who not have participated in the seminars, or have received guidance from their thesis advisor, can be called to do an oral presentation of the completed thesis.
