Introduction
The course will give an introduction to the management of IT-projects. The students will be given an understanding of what an IT-project is and a foundation for planning, organizing and controlling IT-projects. The course will further develop the students’ knowledge about the problems of IT-project work and will, by means of theory and practical examples, show how to plan, organize, manage and control an IT-project to achieve the set goals.

Learning outcome
Acquired knowledge
  • On completion of the programme the students understand the role of IT-projects in developing a private or public organization.
  • The students are familiar with project management language, processes, techniques and methods.
  • The students have knowledge about how to start-up, plan, organize, manage risk, manage stakeholders, follow-up, and terminate an IT-project.

Acquired skills
  • The students are able to use several project management tools and techniques, for example: milestone planning, network planning, risk analysis and stakeholder analysis.
  • The students are able to take an active part in IT-projects.

Reflection
  • The students are able to reflect on the ethical problems associated with the organization of IT-projects.
  • The students are able to understand what it means to participate in a project team and show respect for other team members’ knowledge, opinions, roles and personality.

Learning process and workload
The course consists of 27 lecture hours and 6 hours of training in computer software.

Each week, there will be topics for discussion in class, and students are expected to present issues and topics from their projects properly working with the entire semester.

Guidance in connection with the project assignment will be given throughout the semester both in class and individually.

    Examination
    Grade in the course will be based on the following activities and weights:

    Part 1 - Project paper in which students are shal work with a case with associated tasks to be solved. The project assignment can be completed individually or in groups of up to 3 students. Counts 40% of the total grade for the course.
    Part 2 - A three hour individual written exam at the course. Counts 60% of the total grade for the course.

    Both parts must be passed to obtain a final grade for the course.
