Introduction

This course is part of the Executive Master of Management in Energy in cooperation with BI Norwegian Business School and IFP School.

The course adds to the energy program’s overall objective by addressing external forces in the green energy transition, as well providing analytical tools to evaluate organizations’ resources, capabilities, and activities. Being able to critically reflect on how organizations strategize in competitive and cooperative dimensions to create value is essential. Managers are increasingly facing triple bottom line demands from many stakeholders in an evolving ecosystem which will shape the future of energy supply and demand. This course will help participants to navigate and create novel paths of value creation, benefitting their own organizations and the society at large. 

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

The students shall be able to analyze and critically reflect upon:

  • The strategic fit between a company’s internal resources, capabilities and activities, and its external context
  • The functioning of external and internal analytical tools/frameworks
  • The links between these tools and their role in the overall strategy process
  • The essence of competitive strategy and cooperative strategy
  • Perspectives on value creation and the role of business models
Learning outcomes - Skills

The students shall learn to:

  • Master the functioning and use of internal and external analytical tools
  • Master the combination of these tools into a coherent understanding of value creation and business model design
  • Use insights from strategy analysis (e.g. through the SWOT framework) in generating, evaluating, and choosing strategic alternatives
  • Promote value co-creation between different types of organizations/actors in the energy ecosystem
  • Consider the role and importance of relationships (internal and external) in the value creating process
General Competence

The students shall develop general competence regarding:

  • The systematic, coherent and creative dimensions of strategy analysis
  • The interplay between supply and demand in the energy ecosystem
  • The role of firms and other stakeholders in creating a sustainable future in terms of energy supply and demand

Teaching and learning activities

1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 26-30 hours. 

Sessions include lectures, seminars and group work. 

Attendance to all sessions in the course is compulsory. If you have to miss part(s) of the course you must ask in advance for leave of absence. More than 25% absence in a course will require retaking the entire course. The course is a part of a full Executive Master of Management in Energy (EMME) and examination in all courses must be passed in order to obtain a certificate.
