THIS COURSE WILL BE OFFERED AS A RE-SIT EXAMINATION ONLY IN SPRING 2025.

BI Internship is an opportunity to work full-time in a company/organization as a part of your studies.  BI Internship provides the opportunity to gain practical experience in your particular field of study. It will give you valuable insights in real-world situations and helps you in applying your academic learning to manage digital communication challenges and opportunities.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the formal and informal management systems that affect digital communication patterns in the company.
  • Knowledge of the structure, networks and organization of the communication industry.
  • Knowledge of processes and details of communication technologies, intellectual property, and other facets associated with digital communication.
  • Understand societal, cultural, and relational management dilemmas through a communicative and interactional lens.

  • Solve communication problems in an evidence-based and data-driven manner and formulate corresponding communication propositions.

Course content

Students will work in a company of their choice on tasks that are agreed with the company and specified in the learning contract. The work should be focused on digital communication related tasks either in the context of a social media/communication technology department or similar unit, or in a corporate context that is focused on digital communication.

Teaching and learning activities

bStudents will work full time for 8 weeks (320 hours) in a company or organization. The internship will have to be completed by the end of week 41. The internship may be paid or unpaid, but please note that there is no tradition in Norway for credit-bearing internships to be paid.

The student must attend work as agreed.

In addition to completing the agreed work in the company, students are expected to participate in the following activities:

  • Individual supervision – up to 3 hours
  • Internship kick-off session – up to 1 hour
  • Term paper guidance session – up to 1 hour
  • Reflection seminar – up to 4 hours

No software tools are required. Students are encouraged to expand their knowledge of commonly used tools during the internship.

Additional information

A reading list with recommended literature for the term paper will be distributed by the start of the course, but the students are free to choose their own literature for discussions in the paper as long as it is directly relevant for digital communication management.

Qualifications

All courses in the Masters programme will assume that students have fulfilled the admission requirements for the programme. In addition, courses in second, third and/or fourth semester can have specific prerequisites and will assume that students have followed normal study progression. For double degree and exchange students, please note that equivalent courses are accepted.

Required prerequisite knowledge

To be accepted for an internship, you may have no more than one pending subject. Note that in order to get a BI Internship approved as part of the degree, you need to apply according to BI’s procedures and submit a valid Learning Contract by the application deadline. You must also pass a mandatory online employability course before applying. The course will give you tools to help you land an internship.

Comment: 
To complete the internship, students will write a term paper, including a reflection note. The paper shall include description of company/organization and work tasks. The paper should center on digital communication management questions encountered during the internship. Students shall provide a theory based answer to the questions, as well as a critical discussion of the (limits of the) theories used.
The reflection note should be an appendix to the term paper (1-2 pages). The reflection note should cover insights from the internship that were useful, personally, professionally, and academically to the student.
Students submit a company evaluation together with their paper. The evaluation must be signed by the company as a confirmation that the student has completed the internship.
