Introduction
The course is intended to give a general introduction to law, with a special accommodation to the insurance industry, emphasizing law of damages and insurance law. The course is obligatory to the Insurance exam and to all authorizations in the insurance industry.


Learning outcome

Acquired knowledge
The objective of this course is to provide the students with an overview of juridical thinking enable them to find their way through the legal systems. A further objective is to give the students a common platform for their insurance studies.

Acquired skills
The students shall be able to use the law on cases and be able to explain central judicial topics within source of law, constitutional law, family law, law of contract, law of damages and insurance law.

Reflection
During the course, the students should have acquired a conscious attitude to the fact that their professional choices and advices first and foremost are of importance for other people than themselves.

Course outline
Sources of law and Constitutional law
Principals of judicial methods and how laws are compiled. The students will get an overview over the elements of Norwegian constitutional law and EU/EEA-law that are related to the sources of law.

Family law
Marriage and divorce, including

  • Regulation of property between married couples
  • Economical consequences of separation and divorce

Law of succession
Regulation of administration of estate proceedings, inheritance tax and the legal rules for live-in partners, including:
  • Family succession and order of succession
  • Compulsory heirship
  • Children’s right to advancement of inheritance
  • Inheritance by testament
  • Surviving spouse’s position
  • Common regulation for inheritance by law and testament
  • The position of life and pension insurance at the distribution of a deceased’s estate

Law of damages
Basic conditions for becoming liable for damages
Main rules for calculation of claims for damages

Insurance law
Central rules concerning the governmental regulation of the insurance industry
Main rules of the insurance contracts law of 1989, concerning general insurance, insurance of persons and common regulations

It’s learning (virtual classroom/intranet facilities)

Learning process and workload
Part-time Organized as distance education based on self-tuition and two send-ins (mandatory).
Intensive three-day seminars are organized but participation is not mandatory.



Examination
4 hours individual written exam. If used for Authorization the candidate must obtain at least grade C.
