Introduction

The main purpose is to give students insight into how key economic questions can be studied using theory.

Key topics are (i) Market failure and issues related to environmental externalities; (ii) Public sector’s role; (iii) Effects of international trade; (iv) The Oil sectors’ effect on industry composition; and (v) Economic growth and inequality.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

After taking this course the students should:

  • Have knowledge of how an unregulated economy can give rise to inefficient resource allocation through externalities and limited information.
  • Know what efforts that may be implemented to improve the resource allocation in such economies.
  • Have knowledge about why we have a public sector and its effect on the economy
  • Attain an understanding of the benefits of international trade
  • Attain knowledge of how economic gains from natural resources can affect the composition of industry
  • Understand key drivers of economic growth and income inequality
Learning outcomes - Skills

After taking this course students should be able to:

  • - Analyze economic issues using both textual, graphical and mathematical argumentation.
  • - Account for situations with inefficient resource allocation and discussion government interventions to improve it
  • - Account for the role of the public sector
  • - Understand how trade between countries can be beneficial
  • - Understand how natural resource revenue affects Norwegian politics on oil
  • - Understand the drivers of economic growth and inequality.
General Competence

The students will develop their toolbox for economic analysis by studying key economic questions. They will also attain an awareness of fundamental welfare issues relevant in today’s society.
