Information technology is a key element in globalization, innovation and collaboration. Seamless integration of local, inter-organizational and global business processes is enabled by information technology. Service and product innovation is based on the use of information technology. The Internet and the world-wide-web have revolutionized customer service and provided a basis for new and innovative business models.
Organizations use information system and information technology to support the current business by improving performance (automation and transformation) and to develop future business through innovation (e.g. new business models).
The course applies a blended learning model combining class sessions, online sessions and self-directed learning activities and assignments. Students will get hands-on experience with digital tools during coursework.
On completion of the course the students will
- Understand how information systems and information technology enable and facilitate business innovation and change
- Be familiar with major trends in technology development
- Be familiar with commonly used tools for communication, cooperation and coordination, and social media
- Have knowledge of elements and relationships in an information technology infrastructure
- Understand the role of technology in business processes and service provision
On completion of the course the students will be able to:
- Describe and analyse the use of information technology within business, industry and at value system levels
- Describe an IT infrastructure
- Develop and describe a requirements specification for an information system
- Choose and apply feasible techniques and frameworks for assignments and communication
The students should understand the role of information systems and information technology in organizations and society. They should also be able to reflect upon ethical issues concerning information security and privacy.

The student will be use to a variety of digital tools during the course.
Learning process and workload
The course includes 27 hours of lectures. In addition there will be learning activities such as group assignments, presentations and feedback.

1. Individual written essay - Term paper (50% of the final grade)
The individual assignment is an analysis of an information system or service written in the format of an academic report. The assignment starts in the beginning of the term and includes a collaborative writing process. Students develop drafts early in the course that are available to other students for comments and contributions before they individually edit a final version.
2. Project paper (50% of the final grade)
The project assignment is a group project where students work an existing or new information system or service and develops a conceptual description of a new or improved solution. The project can be done in groups of 2-3 students. The project report is due a few weeks after the final class session.

A re-sit is held in connection with the next scheduled examination in the course. Students who are taking a new examination must take the course all over including all parts of the assessment.
