Introduction

The course aims at qualifying students for management of small and medium-sized enterprises, SMEs, as well as for consultancy work for SMEs. This entails that the specialisation has ties to the business community. Cases and discussions are used to enable students to find work methods for contributing optimally to their own and other students learning. Hence the students become responsible for the learning processes, together with the organizers of the processes.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

After completed course students shall have:

  • Acquired basic knowledge about SME's role and importance in our society
  • Acquired knowledge of management and governing bodies in an SME in various development phases, from start to liquidation of companies
  • Acquired knowledge about support systems and risk management in a SME
  • Know about critical success factors and competitive advantage for a SME

After completed course students shall be able to:

  • Prepare a development plan for an SME
  • Analyze management needs for companies in different phases
  • Prepare plans with associated budget and financial impact assessments for an SME

  • Management, organization and management of an SME
  • Comprehensive management through interaction and team development between the board and daily management
  • The company's life cycle from start-up via growth to mature company
  • Formal aspects of the board's work based on company law, regulations, articles of association and standards

  • Innovation and development from the entrepreneurial phase to running operations - development of business models
  • Management of strategic processes for development and growth in SMEs

Teaching and learning activities

During the semester, 4 work requirements are given, of which 3 must be approved in order to sit for the exam and to be able to submit the project assignment at the end of the semester.

The work requirements are an important part of the preparations for the learning process and the development of the solution for the final project assignment. Discussion and feedback on the work requirements takes place in the meetings.

The project assignment can be solved alone or in groups of up to 3 people. The students themselves are responsible for the creation or dissolution of groups.

Students are required to have a PC with access to the internet. There is no requirement for special ICT competence, but students must be familiar with the use of the internet, search in databases and the use of computer tools to analyze, structure, and present information. Active use of BI's web-based communication platform It’s learning is required

Coursework Requirements

Students who do not get the work requirement approved in the course are not allowed to take the exam. This means that they must take the entire course again at a later course conduction.

Students who do not pass the written exam and/or the project assignment, or who wish to improve their grade, can take a re-sit at next scheduled exams.

Qualifications

Two years of college education in economics and business administration, marketing or equivalent is required for taking the course.
