On completion of the course the students will have insight about:

  • The relationship between sustainability and economic development
  • The logical structure to the Solow model of capital accumulation and economic growth in the long term.
  • The neoclassical growth model and endogenous growth models
  • Sustainable use of natural resources
  • Sustainable economic development and state finances and public debt
  • Inequality and sustainability
  • Climate changes, the environment and sustainable development
  • The importance of education, infrastructure, and governance for sustainable development
Learning outcomes - Skills

On completion of the course the students are to be able to:

  • Explain the main theories of economic growth
  • Discuss the main issues related to sustainable economic development.
  • Demonstrate good overview of the economic theories behind sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Explain the policy trade-offs introduced by climate change and environmental considerations.
  • Be able to analyse the effect of different climate and environmental policies.
  • Show understanding of the importance of education, infrastructure and governance for sustainability.
  • Be able to see the link between objectives and instruments of fiscal policy and conflict of goals between wealth creation and income distribution.
General Competence

Student will learn to identify the relevant economic problems facing firms and governments in an environmental and sustainable development context. Students should be able to discuss ethical issues related to sustainability – to climate changes, environmental issues, inequality and poverty.
