MBA 2449 Consultancy Project
The students shall, as part of the exams requirement, complete a Consultancy Project (CP). Students are expected to work on the CP in groups of three to five students. Exceptions are possible (with explicit prior approval), but experience indicates that group work creates better results and students are encouraged to create diverse working groups.
The topic of the CP should be an analysis and evaluation of a real life challenge (including problems as well as opportunities) facing an organisation. The students should choose the topic from their own company or a company that they have close connection to in order to facilitate access. The students should be able to observe and discuss the topic with people dealing with the challenge in the organisation. Applicable and relevant themes encountered in the MBA coursework should be discussed in the thesis, and the students should demonstrate their ability to apply the models, theories and methods that they have studied to a real situation.
Upon completion, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate various approaches to addressing strategic issues in a Chinese or multi-national organization operating in China.
- Propose effective problem-solving methodologies suitable for a Chinese or multi-national organization operating in China.
Upon completion, the student will be able to:
- Conduct an independent research investigation into a business topic following scientific, evidence-based principles.
- Write a comprehensive research paper reporting the process, findings, and conclusions of a business investigation according to scientific, evidence-based principles.
Upon completion, the student will be able to:
- Analyze managerial challenges using relevant academic, professional, and ethical perspectives.
- Formulate evidence-based conclusions from independent academic work.

Teaching
There will be a one-day lecture on CP work and methodology at an early stage of the program. The lecture will cover the following topics:
- How to conduct a CP
- How to write a CP report
- Phases in CP work
- Critical evaluation of published articles
- Introduction and problem formulation
- Theory, research model, and hypotheses
- Methods considerations and documentation
- Analysis
- Discussion, implications for practice and theory
Supervision
Supervision will be given to the students, by BI faculty, in person as well as electronically.
CP work schedule
A topic hand-in is requested at an early stage; a preliminary report will be submitted at the time of the second supervision; the CP will be presented orally late in the program. The deadline for handing in the written CP report will be approximately one month after the oral presentation.
Student presentation
Students will present their CP orally to the graders and fellow students before the final hand-in.
The CP work is continuous throughout the whole program.
The students are evaluated through a preliminary CP report, an oral presentation of the CP, and the final CP report.
MBA 24494 – Consultancy Project Preliminary Report; accounts for 10%.
MBA 24495 – Consultancy Project Oral Presentation; accounts for 30%
MBA 24496 – Consultancy Project Final Report; accounts for 60%
All three evaluations must be passed in order to fulfill the 30 credits of the MBA 2449 course.
The course is a part of a full MBA and examination in all courses in the MBA programme must be passed in order to obtain a certificate for the MBA degree.
In all BI Executive courses and programmes, there is a mutual requirement for the student and the course responsible regarding the involvement of the student's experience in the planning and implementation of courses, modules and programmes. This means that the student has the right and duty to get involved with their own knowledge and practice relevance, through the active sharing of their relevant experience and knowledge.
The Consultancy Project is the independent work in the master's degree, cf. the Norwegian Regulations to the University and College Act.

All exams must be passed to get a grade in this course.
A course of 1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 26-30 hours. Therefore a course of 30 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of at least 800 hours.
