MBA 2391 Organisational Management and Control
This course addresses the topic of organization design and the related various management control approaches. The course aims to create an understanding of appropriate organizational design for different types of institutions, and build practical skills related to the principles and challenges of designing and implementing contemporary organizations. The latter includes the dynamics and processes of structuring organizations, and the specific ways organizations can set up and use their management control and performance measurement systems.

The course is broken down into the two elements of Organization Theory & Design, and Management Control, which will be covered in the above order.

Management control
- Conventional management control (responsibility centers, budgeting, financial performance metrics)
- Performance measurement systems (non-financial metrics, link to strategy and organisation design, bottom-up use of performance measurement)
2 of the teaching hours in this course are dedicated to CSR, ethics, social and environmental issues.
The course is conducted as a teaching module, where students have classes all day for four subsequent days, a total of 32 hours.
The aim is to provide immediate value by connecting the course contents with the work experiences of the participants, and to use learning-by-doing as much as possible. The course is structured by means of a mix of lectures, case studies, classroom discussions, in-class exercises, and a final course assignment. The course is taught entirely in a digital format, with all materials only available in soft copy.
This is a course with continuous assessment (several exam components) and one final exam code. Each exam component will be graded using points on a scale 0 -100. The components will be weighted together according to the information in the course description in order to calculate the final letter grade for the course. Students who fail to participate in one/some/all exam components will get a lower grade or may fail the course. Candidates may be called in for an oral hearing as a verification/control of written assignments.
Specific information regarding the points system and the mapping scale beyond the information given in the course description will be provided in class. This information may be relevant for requirements for term papers or other hand-ins, and/or where class participation can be one of several elements of the overall evaluation.
The course is a part of a full MBA and examination in all courses in the MBA programme must be passed in order to obtain a certificate for the MBA degree.
The course uses WeChat Work software for case group collaboration, the WeChat app for interaction with case groups and individual participants, and a local (passive) Chinese hosting site for only the reading materials which acts to alleviate download problems from the ItsLearning platform. Students are strongly suggested to familiarize themselves with the relevant software as well as utilize an independent (non-company) laptop and have independent Internet access.
In all BI Executive courses and programmes, there is a mutual requirement
for the student and the course responsible regarding the involvement of the student's experience in the planning and implementation of courses, modules and programmes. This means that the student has the right and duty to get involved with their own knowledge and practice relevance, through the active sharing of their relevant experience and knowledge.
In case the course needs to be conducted online, the format changes to a 'flipped classroom': asynchronous lecture videos (PPT driven, no 'talking heads') will replace the classroom lectures, while the synchronous, Zoom-based sessions will be dedicated entirely to student interaction, driven by a Q&A-based agenda that has been developed in/by the case groups in advance. The synchronous, Zoom-based sessions will be attended in the case group compositions and in group rooms and not the main auditorium, in order to obtain the necessary peer-to-peer learning context.
