Introduction

We have a project-based society and therefore it is salient to have the competence and capabilities to lead projects, from the early idea of a project and throughout its life cycle, as well as to materialize the benefits of implementing project deliveries. This course provides the participants with knowledge, skills and attitudes to lead projects and to use projects as a way of organizing work in their own organization. We look into the core processes of managing and leading projects such as planning, organizing, planning, and various strategies for project execution. We learn how to manage risk and opportunities, collaborating with stakeholders, evaluating and learning from projects, and how to understand and enable the various dimensions of project success. We also study together the characteristics of efficient project teams and how to enable team work, knowledge integration in teams, culture and climate for coordination and collaboration in teams. We include both stage gate and agile methodlogies. Also, project work is reflecet on in light of ethcial issues,  sustainability issues, and the impact of digitalization.  

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

After having completed the course, the participants should have developed the following knowledge:

  • Hold advanced knowledge of key terms and challenges within the area of project management associated with planning, organizing, implementing and following up/evaluating projects.
  • Be knowledgeable about relevant disciplinary and work-ethical problems within the area of project management.
  • Be knowledgeable about basic theories, methods and concepts within the domain of project management.
  • Be knowledgeable about the history of the domain of project management, its traditions and characteristics.
  • Be knowledgeable research and development work within the field of leading and managing projects.

 

Learning outcomes - Skills

After having completed the course, the participants should have developed the following skills:

  • Be able to evaluate a project in terms of costs and benefits, the risks associated with a project, its opportunities and its ability realize benefits.
  • Be able to prepare for project start-up and implementation by establishing a solid foundation for the project.
  • Be able to plan a project appropriately.
  • Be able to prepare for adaptive organization of the project, and divide responsibilities and clarify roles.
  • Be able to chose an appropriate and situation specific way of organizing of the project, including the development of formal and informal structures, developing of roles and procedures, understand and collaborate with stakeholders in an efficient and embedded way.
  • Be able to control and evaluate the project.
  • Be able to analyze and influence the way the team develops. .
  • Be able to analyze the role, style and behavior of the project leader in different contexts.
  • Be able to analyze and evaluate an organizations project maturity and development in a project perspective.
  • Be able to view and analyze the project in a strategic perspective.
General Competence

After having completed the course, the participants should have developed the following attitudes:

  • Willingness to follow and take part in the development of the domain of project management and develop knowledge and skills within the area of project management.
  • Willingness to critically reflect and analyze the development and focus of the domain of project management including relevant issues related to domain, industry and ethics 
  • Willingness to reflect over the theories and tools they apply in their own practice and continuously aiming to improve their own project practice.
  • Be motivated for acting responsibly in their everyday project practice
Course content

1st course module:The project's foundation – starting up the project

2nd course module:Project execution models, planning and uncertainty management

3rd course module: Project organizing and the relational context of projects, stakeholders

4th course module: Project control, governance, project evaluation and project learning

5th course module: Project leadership and team work. Coping with ethical issues in projects.

6th course module: The project oriented enterprise, program and portfolio management. Summary and conclusion of the programme.

Teaching and learning activities

The programme is conducted through six course modules over two semesters, a total of approx. 150 lecturing hours. Project tutorials includes personal tutorials and tutorials given in class. Generally, the students may expect consulting tutorials, not evaluating tutorials. The total hours of tutorials offered is estimated to 4 hours per term paper.

Please note that while attendance is not compulsory, it is the student's own responsibility to obtain any information provided in class that is not included on the course homepage/ itslearning or other course materials.

The students are evaluated through a term paper, counting 60% of the total grade and a 72 hours individual home exam counting 40%. The term paper may be written individually or in groups of maximum three persons. All evaluations must be passed to obtain a certificate for the programme. The term paper is included in the degree’s independent work of degree, cf national regulation on requirements for master’s degree, equivalent to 18 ECTS credits per. programme. For the Executive Master of Management degree, the independent work of degree represents the sum of term papers from three programmes.

In all BI Executive courses and programs, there is a mutual requirement  
for the student and the course responsible regarding the involvement of the student's experience in the planning and implementation of courses, modules and programmes. This means that the student has the right and duty to get involved with their own knowledge and practice relevance, through the active sharing of their relevant experience and knowledge.

Qualifications

Bachelor degree, corresponding to 180 credits from an accredited university, university college or similar educational institution. The applicant must be at least 25 years of age and at least four years of work experience. For applicants who have already completed a master’s degree, three years of work experience are required.
