Introduction

The UC Berkeley one-week innovation and entrepreneurship program is a hands-on, immersive, investigation into how startups are created and launched. We also investigate how these startup principles can be applied in an enterprise environment, with the concept of corporate entrepreneurship.  During week together, we will undertake a compressed process of new venture ideation, screening, investigation, prototyping, go-to-market planning, and business modeling, culminating in our own DemoDay where each of the teams will present their funding pitch. The development of an abbreviated business plan, based on your teams funding pitch, is also a BI requirement for this module.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

Upon completion, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze entrepreneurship ecosystem and compare it with other global entrepreneurship models.
  • Evaluate new venture creations.
  • Analyze and explain new venture finance, customer development, business strategy, and business models.

Upon completion, the student will be able to:

  • Develop an innovative idea into a comprehensive business plan.
  • Identify and evaluate new venture opportunities.
  • Construct and justify a venture team structure and resource allocation.
  • Deliver a persuasive pitch for a business idea, incorporating feedback and adapting to audience needs.
General Competence

Upon completion, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze the inherent risks and uncertainties in entrepreneurial activities and propose strategies for mitigation.
  • Critically compare and contrast the characteristics and challenges of entrepreneurial life with professional life.
  • Analyze and evaluate the motivations, investment criteria, and strategies of venture capitalists.
Course content

Lectures, seminars and presentations on the following topics:

  • Business models.
  • Innovation from inside.
  • Entrepreneurship and startups.
  • Innovation process.
  • Business plan development.

Company visits

Teaching and learning activities

The course runs of 5 days with a combination of lectures, presentations and company visits. The content is entirely delivered by faculty from UC Berkeley.

1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 26-30 hours.

Attendance to all sessions in the course is compulsory. If you have to miss part(s) of the course you must ask in advance for leave of absence. More than 25% absence in a course will require retaking the entire course. It's the student's own responsibility to obtain any information provided in class that is not included on the course homepage/ It's learning or other course materials.

Candidates may be called in for an oral hearing as a verification/control of written assignments.

The course is a part of a full Executive MBA programme and examination in all courses must be passed in order to obtain a certificate.

In all BI Executive courses and programmes, there is a mutual requirement for the student and the course responsible regarding the involvement of the student's experience in the planning and implementation of courses, modules and programmes. This means that the student has the right and duty to get involved with their own knowledge and practice relevance, through the active sharing of their relevant experience and knowledge.
