ELE 3745 Leadership Training, Personal Development and Coaching
This course targets students who are interested in personal development and practical leadership training. The scientific foundation is within positive psychology, while coaching and mentoring represent the practical tools.
The primary aim is to develop our student’s insight and reflection on own role as a leader. The course will convey an introduction to leader- and employee development, coaching as well as personal development.
During the course, students shall acquire:
- Knowledge about how to use coaching tools to develop effective interaction and communication.
- Knowledge about well-known/acknowledged (central) models of coaching
- An increased insight into own patterns of thought, of personality and behaviour influences relationships, and attain some tools for self regulation.
- Knowledge of central theoretical subject areas, such as cognitive and positive psychology, team- and group processes, stress and coping, etc.
- The participants shall acquire insight into tools of leadership, with a focus on communication, listening and giving feedback.
- Introduction to basic principles for leader- and team development.
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
- Practice cognitive frameworks to better be able to understand and assist individuals, leaders and teams in challenges with interpersonal relations.
- Use (different?) coaching tools to assist others in developing their potential, create engagement, motivation and job satisfaction.
- Use communication tools from (the subject area) leadership development (active listening, feed-back, etc.)
- Apply research based knowledge about leadership to help leaders develop a more effective interaction.
The aim is to help students achieve attitudes and reflections related to:
- The functioning of great leaders, teams and organizations
- Altruism and positive psychology as basis for helping others
- Leadership as a learning process entailing a step-by-step process for the individual, the team and the organization
The content of this course focus on self-management, leadership development and coaching. It aims at
- Identify strengths and core qualities to develop resilience, mastery and personal effectiveness
- Identify own stressors and biases/heuristics and use tools to achieve mastery, creativity and energy.
- Prepare for presentations in class, facilitate group/team processes, give feedback that is both constructive and developmental feedback
- Attain principles for leadership training and team development
This is a seminar based course with four full days of classroom teaching (24 hours in total). In addition, each class conducts a virtual four hour simulation exercise, and a two hour exam preparation lecture. There is 15 hours of asynchronous teaching material (e.g. introductory lectures, self-tests, podcasts and TED talks with researchers and practitioners).
The student’s learning process takes place during short lectures, student teamwork, case work individually and in groups, role play, tests, and casework. Each class will have maximum 40 students. We emphasize a safe learning environment where students are expected to participate in the classroom learning process. In addition, students are expected to do teamwork (peer coaching) between sessions.
At the end of the course, the students have an individual digital written school exam.
For electives re-sit is normally offered at the next scheduled course. If an elective is discontinued or is not initiated in the semester it is offered, re-sit will be offered in the electives ordinary semester.
